I’ve been busy knitting up hats for this holiday gift giving season. Plus a couple of scarves and cowls.

Some of the hats I’ve knitted with wool or wool blend yarns. I got the flower design chart from a Vogue knitting book on loan from the library. I forgot to make a copy before returning the book.

The other hat was decorated with bobbles. Bobbles make hat look like fun. A simple way to make bobbles is to watch this tutorial.

More fun bobbles in this little case I knitted for my sunglass. Using bamboo blend yarn. Even in winter the sun can be bright out in California.

This swirl top hat was knitted top down with this swirl making pattern:

U.S. DPN (double pointed needles) size 7. Cast on 8 sts. Divide sts onto 3 needles. Place marker at first stitch.

Rnd 1: Knit thru back of loop of each st to end.
Rnd 2: [Yfwd, K1] 8 times
Rnd 3 and all odd rnds: knit
Rnd 4: [Yfwd, K2] 8 times
Rnd 6: [Yfwd, K3] 8 times
Rnd 8: [Yfwd, K4] 8 times
Rnd 10: [Yfwd, K5] 8 times
Rnd 12: [Yfwd, K6] 8 times

Just keep making the increase until you get the size you like. I stopped at Rnd 12. Then switch to circular needles, preferably 16″ size 7. And the ribbing size 6.

Notes:

Yfwd means “yarn forward”. Bring the yarn to the front and knit as normal, this creates an increase.

As for bobbles (BB), here’s another way to make them:
(K1,P1) twice, K1 into the next st, turn: P5, pass 4th, 3rd, 2nd, and 1 st separately over the last st knitted.

Little Cotton Rabbit provides free knitted alphabet charts from A - Z. Kids would like having their initials on hats, so it’s more personalized.

Cambree, you are getting good at this. The sunglasses case is a neat idea. The knitting term is so foreign to me, I’m sure it is second nature to you now. :)

  2. Nye, I like to think I’m getting better at it. But I’ve seen really amazing patterns and would love to knit them someday. As for the terms, they are knitting abbreviations and reference notes to self. :)
