I’ve always like these plants. But I never knew what it was called until I wrote a post about the Suriname Cherry. They are from the same specie called “Myrtaceae”. No wonder the leaves had the same nice scent as well as shape too.
Their common name is “Lilly Pilly” and also known as “scrub cherry.” I think Lilly Pilly is much more fun to say and describes these cute little berries very well. They are native to Queensland, Australia. But can be grown in many climates, including Northern California.
“The native berries that grow on these large Lilly Pilly Trees in Australia are incredibly attractive as well as useful…some varieties can be used to make jam and other treats.” -Photo and description from Flavors of Australia.
In the U.S., these shrubs are usually used as privacy hedges. They are also used as ornamental plants and popular amongst commercial as well as residential landscaping. And if you like birds, they will be sure to attract them.
The berries are pink to purple in color and is described to be very mild in taste. The berries are usually made into jams, jellies, or drinks. I have neither tasted the fruit or the jam.
