These are some plants I’m growing in pots. It’s hard to see, but the bamboo plant is growing strong and turning green again.
I also got myself a little Meyer Improved Lemon tree, it’s really more of a stick with a few leaves. They are suppose to produce tangy, juicy, medium-sized lemons. But I’m sure that won’t be for a long while.

There is also a skinny aloe vera that needs some new soil soon. The round cactus doesn’t require much attention. And in the back is some peppermint. The big green leaves in the background are just Ivy.
Nasturtiums (in the corner) are turning out really nice. I am hoping to pot some more flowers too. Especially geraniums and zinnias since they are so easy to grow.
What I’m really excited about is the fresh catnip. Here is one of the cats (G) that love chomping on them. He’s a big black cat that’s really quiet and sweet. He used to disappear for days, only to return home with freshly combed out fur. I suspect he may have found a new home down the block.
The cats love dried catnip and go crazy for them. It makes them want to roll on the floor and look really happy and relaxed. Besides the cat loving them, catnip can also be used as herbal remedies.
Here’s what I gathered from Monterrey Herb:
“Fresh leaves were chewed to relieve headache.
Catnip was combined with damiana leaf and the smoke inhaled to produce euphoria with visual hallucinations (partially due to the nepetalactone content of Nepata cataria.)
Catnip, in combination with Eugenia caryophyllata, and Sassafras albidum, was used as poultice for aching teeth by those in America’s Ozark Mountain region.
Catnip alone was sometimes smoked to relieve respiratory ailments. ” In this case, I grew it mainly as a treat for the cats.
iPhone photos.
Mom’s plant collection. The nasturtiums seeds I planted just a month ago really love it here.

Your sidewalk garden made me think of Laos, the city folks are really big in potted gardening as well. Your bamboo trees look very healthy, you might get enough shoot next year for cooking.

Hi Nye,
My sidewalk garden is lacking some color, which I hope to add soon.
Sometimes I’ll notice apartments in the city with balconies that are full of potted plants. It’s almost like a mini outdoor jungle out there.
The bamboo does have little shoots, but I don’t think they will taste any good. I prefer the big ones you guys harvested recently. But our local temple grows them too - they are just really protective of them.

Cambree, our temple don’t mind. The old lady that help out at the temple said that there are several people harvesting daily during the bamboo season. The bamboo spread so fast and this is a way to control them from spreading into the neighbor’s land.

That is a great and reasonable idea. The bamboo at this temple is grown in mounds and it doesn’t spread too much. Then again, it’s only been a little over a year. The shoots go crazy and get really high.
When I see the huge bamboo stalk, I just want to cut them up and stuff them with sweet sticky coconut rice. I forgot the name of this popular dessert, but it’s very tasty!
