I finally got to taste my first fresh dragonfruit, also known as Pitaya. I found them for sale at the local Asian market priced at $5 per pound. I asked if these fruits were shipped from Asia, such as Thailand or Vietnam. But the cashier said these were from the wholesale fruit market in San Francisco. I wonder if it’s from American farmers out in southern California.
The fruit of this size was priced at $2. It had such a nice pinkish red skin with white flesh inside. I was hoping it would be sweet, but it was very bland! Kind of like a water fruit, possibly great if you were thirsty. But the seeds were nutty and gave it some texture. The flesh near the skin was a bit tart too.
Dragonfruit flesh also reminded me of eating prickly pear and kiwi fruit. Especially with the melon like flesh and the tiny black seeds. They are great summertime fruits, when chilled.
Dragonfruit is full of antioxidant, fiber and high in vitamin C. I’ve heard that the red flesh version is the best tasting one. It is also the ones I buy dried from Trader Joe’s (when it’s in season). Dried dragonfruit has much more vitamin C then the fresh one. I usually use it to make tea and it taste very much like hibiscus tea.
I cut them up into small pieces. Taste very light and the seeds gave it some texture. It reminded me of eating gelatin, a real fruit Jell-O.

My parents love this fruit, I think I tried it once when I was a kid and never like it. It is pretty popular with asian people. I didn’t know that Trader Joe’s sell this fruit there, I have to tell my parents about it.

The fruit isn’t too bad - just need to pick the right variety (red flesh) since it’s suppose to taste much better.
Trader Joe’s dried dragonfruit isn’t available now, maybe later in the year. I usually stock up on them.

My dad and I tasted it for the first time in Laos and my dad really liked it, I wasn’t too crazy about it because there were many other exotic fruits for me to try
. They sold it here locally at the Asian Market, but I’ve not seen it this year.

I remember you had some neat photos of tropical fruits from the Lao market. Wish I could taste them, I’m sure a tropical fruit vacation would be a dream vacation!
