Beauty, Health and Living

I’ve been looking for an environmentally friendlier laundry detergent for some time now.  And this ECOS brand is just the right laundry detergent for my laundry needs.  And the fact that Costco had it for such a great price was another plus.

ecos Magnolia & Lillies is made with 100% natural coconut kernel oil-based surfactant, horsetail plant, lavender, coconut based fabric softener, essential oils of magnolias and lilies, with purified water. Image and info from Ecos.

At first I was thinking how could this natural stuff compete with the commercial brand like Tide.

Maybe it wouldn’t even clean as well?  But I was surprised to know that it did it’s job very well. ECOS laundry detergent also has a built-in soy based fabric softener and cellulose based optical brightener.

And it’s not just good for laundry, but better for the environment too.  It’s free of SLS (Sodium laurel sulfate) and is vegetable based with other natural ingredients such as essential oils and plant material.

Since I am not a fan of lavender, I was happy they had other selections too. The one I got was magnolia and lily, it has a nice and light scent that is not overpowering like many commercial brands.

Before I discovered ECOS, I was using Arm & Hammer with some borax.  Or sometimes I would use my liquid handmade soaps (that I salvaged from a bad batch of soap making).

I also prefer liquid laundry detergent over the powder as it never leaves any powder mark on my clothes. And it’s also easy to use and measure out.

ECOS is also available at many health food stores.  You can also find it at many online retailers. Amazon sells them in big packs of four.  My big jug from Costco was about $12 for 210 loads. I have to transfer it into a smaller bottle to make it easier to use. It’s a great laundry detergent I would highly recommend.

Features:

* Neutral pH (7-8), rarely causes irritations in customers with skin sensitivities/allergies.

* Non-polluting/100% biodegradable/non-toxic/natural.

* Fragrance-free variety is free of magnolia and lily oils, but still contains the coconut surfactant, lavender and rosemary.

* Made of replenishable/sustainable ingredients.

* Plant-based surfactants we use do not harm the item being cleaned, your body or the environment.

* Pleasantly scented with pure, natural, essential oils of magnolias and lilies.

* Color-safe: clothes do not discolor as easily as with other more alkaline detergents.

    I’ve never seen this brand before, I guess I had never shopped for laundry detergent, I’ve used Tide as long as I could remember. I like liquid detergent also,it doesn’t leave the residue on the clothes.

    I like the fact that this one is environmental friendly,definitely need to give this a try.

  2. Hi Nye,

    The nice and light scent is my favorite part (as it’s made with essential oils). For a vegetable oil base, it does clean very well.

    Btw, you are like my mom… she loves her Tide and Dove soap! I am the one that usually introduce her to some new and hopefully better stuff. :)

    Does your mom use Colgate also? :)

  4. The answer is - YES! She said at the time it was also the most popular brand in Laos and Thailand.

    I switched her to Tom’s of Maine for over 10 years. But now she’s using another toothpaste from Thailand “Hawlay & Hazel” that her friends recommended. She said her gums feel healthier too. I’ve tried it once, it’s very minty.

    It sounds like I’m too much like your mom, I hope I don’t look like her. :)

  6. Nye you are a funny gal! I think you two would get along very well.

    I know I get my pragmatism from her and my optimism from my dad. Not such a bad combination. :)
