I didn’t actually harvest these, but it is autumn and many of my favorite fruits are in season.

Dragonfruit are also back in season too (in some parts of the world).  A few months back it was lychee and jujube that were in season.

I should take a photo of the inside of these fruits, they are just as interesting from the inside out. In the meantime, here is a great website of Thai tropical fruits. They list when the fruits will be in season and also the names of the fruits in Thai too.  Longons are call “lam yai” and Dragonfruit “Mang Gorn”.

The persimmon and pineapple guavas are locally harvested. At American supermarket, persimmon sell for $1 a piece. But if you visit the Asian markets you can find a bag of 10 pieces for $1.50. Much better deal!

And pineapple guavas (also call Feijoa) don’t really make it to market.  It doesn’t travel well and people don’t really know much about it.  But it is a tasty little fruit.  It has a scent like that of pineapple and guava. These feijoa were harvested last October in ‘08.  Much more rounder.

All these fruits make great snacks.  They are full of fiber, Vitamin C and other minerals.

A little more info on Dragonfruit:

Native to Latin America, Dragon Fruit, also known as Pitaya, is a cactus family fruit with a somewhat grainy, magenta, pink or white flesh with many small edible seeds. Pitaya is also available canned or jarred in specialty markets. - Frieda’s Specialty Produce.

And if you happen to live in a warmer climate (like Hawaii) you can grow them by cuttings. They grow quickly and can produce fruit in six to nine months.

Here is an interesting article (Enter the dragon, plucked in your own yard By Jari Sugano) on how to grow them. Looks like fun!

  1. I’ve never tried the feijoa before, looks interesting and the plants and flowers look real pretty. I bet it’d grow well in our area since we’re not as cold as up north.

  2. Hi Nye,
Our Lowe’s has feijoa tree (pineapple guava) for $35. A bit too expensive for me. I tried to grow one from cuttings but it didn’t work. I may try again since my mom really loves them.

I tried the dragon fruit drink in the can. OK. Little chunks of it reminded me of kiwi.

I would love to grow one in the garden, but I think it will not survive the winter. But I’m adding an olive tree, a fig and two apricots next year…they’re on order.

Nye - did you plant the blueberry yet? I put mine in two weeks ago near the Asian pear and pomegranate. The birds are going to love those berries.
